The Republic of Latvia has a population of approximately 2.4 million. Latvia is a fully independent jurisdiction, a committed European Union member. In recent years its economy growth has outperformed all other EU economies and has been labeled the “Baltic Tiger” due to its phenomenal growth rates. GDP growth in Latvia is buoyant and reached an all-time-high in 2005 - 10.2% after 8.5 % last year. This has been primarily due to a highly educated workforce, well developed infrastructure and pro-business government initiatives. Latvian growth has been supported by strong domestic demand and expansion of exports. In 2006 rapid economic growth continued in Latvia and an 11.1% year-on-year increase was recorded for the second quarter. In 2006 the major driving force for the economy was the increasing consumption: the highest growth was recorded in trade (18.7%), real estate, renting and business activities (16.5%) and construction (16.1%). Latvia’s corporate taxes are one of the lowest in the European Union—15 %. Latvia has established one of the most liberal foreign exchange regimes in the world, ensuring free cash and capital movements to and from the country. Riga, the capital of Latvia, is located along the Baltic Sea and is the geographical centre of the Baltic States. Due to its highly advantageous geographical location on the Baltic coast Latvia has for centuries been recognized as a significant industrial and international trade centre. Nowadays Latvia offers politically and economically stable environment for foreign business being an ideal springboard to vast Russian and EU markets. Riga’s cross-roads location between Western Europe and huge Eastern markets has always been - and is - one of Riga’s attractions for business activities. The name of Riga is known across Europe. Riga is also an important transport junction. The historically developed transportation infrastructure has facilitated Riga’s evolution as the major industrial and business center in the Baltic Sea region. |
